Sesebiyori is a media platform dedicated to Japanese wagashi (traditional sweets), gathering information from all over Japan—content that makes you suddenly crave wagashi without even realizing it.
It has been running since 2018.
Seeing traditional wagashi shops gradually disappear has been heartbreaking. With the motto “Go when you can, while you can,” I visit and document these shops as a way of preserving memories—something I hope to look back on and enjoy when I’m an old woman someday.
While I hope more people will experience the calm, comforting moments that come from enjoying wagashi—and come to appreciate the artisans who devote themselves wholeheartedly to their craft—what has truly driven me is simple curiosity: I want to taste these sweets at least once before the shops are gone. I want to meet the people behind them. And so I have traveled across Japan in pursuit of that passion.
Through the people I’ve met, the stories behind how each wagashi was created, the reasons they have endured into the present day, and even their connections to other countries, I became eager to study wagashi more deeply. Since 2023, I have been working as a researcher of wagashi culture, conducting fieldwork to document, compare, and explore both the history of wagashi and its future possibilities.
